Collection SummaryWhereas a modern F1 team in its entirety might span anywhere from 300 to 1200 people, BRM even at its largest point never exceeded 120 peopleHistoryWhereas a modern F1 team in its entirety might span anywhere from 300 to 1200 people, BRM even at its largest point never exceeded 120 people. This is especially remarkable when you consider that the BRM team was responsible for every aspect, from fabrication, construction, sales and tuning. Whether based at the Spalding Road “Maltings” factory built into the very grounds of Eastgate house (Raymond Mays home) or at the nearby Folkingham Air base, the team was required to work long hours and often overnight until whatever they were working on got finished.
BRM had a loyalty to the local area; Many of those who worked for BRM did so as apprentices, joining straight out of school or upon their return from the army during the war. With such a small workforce camaraderie was essential, especially when the teams would not only be working together but often traveling together for the World Championship races- even if those races took place over Christmas or important personal milestones. Nicknames and practical jokes were commonplace, and unlike today, even the rival teams were treated sociably and given assistance if they needed it. There were even those who were not an official part of the BRM team, like Rivers Fletcher, who followed the team with his handheld camera and used his videos to publicise their overseas efforts for those left back at home.
Even those who didn’t work in a directly hands-on manner worked tirelessly to further the esteem and successes of British Racing Motors. Whether it was from the funding of the Owens family keeping the team afloat during the more difficult pre-1962 years, or even Louis Stanley who personally tested fireproof suits in the aftermath of Jackie Stewart’s racing accident in Spa 1966, the dedication of those involved in BRM could not be faulted. Many stayed until the doors closed of Stanley-BRM, whilst others still to this day meet up with their old racing teammates. The town of Bourne holds BRM with fondness decades after their closing...truly a sign of the deep affection and respect that was inspired by the cooperation and tireless graft of the team.
